Karen Owens, PsyD

Staff Psychologist/Group Coordinator

Karen (she/her/hers) received her doctorate degree in clinical psychology at Immaculata University where she also received her master’s degree in clinical psychology. Her years of training included an APA internship at Belmont Behavioral Outpatient Program where she provided both individual and group therapy in a community mental health setting. She also received a master’s degree in political science and bachelor’s degree in American studies at Temple University.

Through her clinical training and work experience, Karen has had the opportunity to bear witness to the strengths and challenges of people as they navigated their own personal stories, their connection to others, and their experiences with community both large and small. Karen’s experiences also included opportunities to work or train in various settings, such as college counseling, community mental health, private practice, jail, homeless shelters, and a community organization in Kensington. She has experience in providing both individual and group therapy.

As a therapist, Karen focuses on helping others better understand the patterns and roots that help shape how they see themselves and interact with the world. These patterns impact the whole person (emotions, thoughts, physical reactions, and behavioral responses). Exploring these patterns together can help a person recognize the strategies they use and beliefs they hold that help them navigate everyday life and know more about their own identities. It can create opportunities for healing and growth as a person recognizes their strengths and learns more about how they operate, what they hope for, and what they might need to help them move forward. This approach is rooted in psychodynamic therapy, adaptive information processing theory, and attachment theory. Karen is trained in both EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy).

Outside of work, Karen enjoys playing softball, exploring Philly, and checking out the latest Broadway musicals.
