Dear Members of the Drexel Community,
As we prepare to welcome Antonio Merlo as Drexel’s 16th president in a few days, I felt it vital to reflect on the admirable leadership of Denis O’Brien, who has served outstandingly as our interim president since the fall.
Denis stepped into the role with wisdom and grace during a crucial time for our institution as we navigated challenges facing higher education alongside major institutional shifts.
A former PECO and Exelon executive, and LeBow College of Business graduate, his strong and steady leadership abilities and keen judgment shined as he guided Drexel through key initiatives including the naming and transition of a new president, advancing plans for Academic Transformation and financial resilience, and ensuring our students had the very best educational experience.
A member of Drexel’s Board of Trustees for more than two decades, as interim president Denis made it a point to get to know our faculty, professional staff and students on an even deeper level, hearing and understanding their various perspectives, guiding their progress and cheering them on every step of the way. And his sturdy roots in Philadelphia have helped strengthen Drexel’s relationship with the beloved city it calls home.
I can confidently speak for the entire Board of Trustees, as well as the broader Drexel community, in expressing our deep gratitude for Denis and his tireless contributions to our University always, but especially over the past year. His clear vision, collaborative leadership and unwavering commitment to upholding our Drexel values have benefited our institution immensely.
I am pleased that Denis has agreed to serve as a vice chair of the Board of Trustees as Drexel enters an exciting new era. Once again, I extend my heartfelt thanks to Denis for a remarkable tenure as interim president.
Sincerely,
Mike Lawrie
Chair, Board of Trustees
