Youngmoo Kim, PhD

Vice Provost for University and Community Partnerships; Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering; Director of the Expressive & Creative Interaction Technologies (ExCITe) Center

Kim is Drexel's vice provost for University and Community Partnerships. His research focuses on inclusive education, technology-centered learning and digital media technologies that will shape the future of entertainment, especially in the areas of sound and music. He is director of the Music and Entertainment Technology Laboratory (MET-lab), which focuses on research in machine listening and music information retrieval, music production technology and new music interfaces. He is also the founding director of Drexel's Expressive and Creative Interaction Technologies (ExCITe) Center and resident technologist for Opera Philadelphia.

Kim is regarded as a leader in K-12 outreach for STEM education through his work to build the ExCITe Center into a hub of learning and innovation. The Center annually hosts researchers, events and presentations that foster creative endeavors in the arts and STEM, including the Center's Summer Music Technology Program. Kim has led research into the effectiveness of maker spaces in education. He has also worked to establish partnerships with community and educational organizations throughout the city, including the West Philadelphia Promise Neighborhood and Malcolm Jenkins Foundation, which helped to create the Young Dragons summer program.

In addition to his electrical engineering background, Kim also holds degrees in media arts and sciences, music and vocal performance. Kim has extensive experience in music performance, including 8 years as a member of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus (the chorus of the Boston Symphony Orchestra). He has performed in productions at American Musical Theater of San Jose and SpeakEasy Stage Company (Boston) and currently sings with The Tonics, a local a cappella ensemble. He is a member of Opera Philadelphia’s American Repertoire Council.
