Finding My Community

When I first came to Drexel, I was already running a small art business that I started in high school. Creating has always been my passion and turning that passion into a business was both an exciting and challenging way for me to showcase my work while honing my entrepreneurial skills.
However, my early experience as a young business owner wasn't always positive. Back in high school, I faced a lot of discouragement. The art community I was a part of was highly competitive, and some students were quick to tear others down instead of lifting them up. On more than one occasion, I had pieces stolen or damaged during school art shows. It felt disheartening, like my effort and dedication didn't matter to those around me.
I'm so grateful for the support, encouragement, and sense of belonging that I've found here.
Coming to Drexel, I hoped things would be different, especially when I learned about the Proving Ground Pop-Ups hosted in the Pearlstein lobby by the Charles D. Close School of Entrepreneurship. I saw it as an opportunity to connect with like-minded artists and entrepreneurs who would be more supportive. And I'm so grateful to say that my expectations were exceeded. From the very first event, everyone — from the staff organizing it to my fellow student vendors — was incredibly kind, supportive, and encouraging. The Proving Ground Pop-Ups introduced me to a community of talented, passionate people who not only appreciated my work but also offered their expertise and advice. Through these events, I've built relationships that I can lean on for guidance and collaboration. The positive atmosphere at the markets was a breath of fresh air compared to my previous experiences, and it made a huge impact on both my confidence and my business. Participating in these markets has not only grown my business but also boosted my confidence as an entrepreneur.
I've been encouraged to take part in pitch competitions and other competitions at events like Startup Fest and Future Fest — something I hadn't considered before because I wasn't sure I stood a chance. But the support I've received through the Close School and these pop-ups changed that. I now feel empowered to share my ideas and believe in their potential. Thanks to the exposure and connections I've gained through the Proving Ground Pop-Ups, my business has grown in ways I never thought possible. People now recognize me when I attend other markets, and I've built a network that I know will continue to help me succeed.
None of this would have been possible without the incredible environment fostered by the Close School and its hosted events. I'm so grateful for the support, encouragement, and sense of belonging that I've found here. If I could say anything to anyone considering starting a business or pursuing their passion, find a supportive community. Surround yourself with people who genuinely want to see you succeed. It makes all the difference when you're facing setbacks or doubts. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there, even if you're unsure of the outcome. Opportunities like the Proving Ground Pop-Ups can open doors you never expected, and you might surprise yourself with what you're capable of achieving when you're in the right environment.
